Most people on Facebook belong to at least 15 active groups, and more than 100 million join one every day. People needed clearer ways to navigate between communities and understand where they were without losing context.

Approach

Groups had grown into a collection of entry points, states, and community experiences that didn't always behave as one system. I focused on restoring orientation: clarifying how people moved through Community Home, defining reusable interaction patterns across key entry points, and bringing the experience closer to a shared design language across iOS and Android.

  • Restore orientation first. Refine Community Home, navigation, and transitions so people could move between Groups experiences with a clearer sense of where they were and what came next.
  • Reuse patterns across entry points. Define shared panels, invitation experiences, and states that could work consistently across iOS and Android instead of solving each surface independently.
  • Treat quality as a system problem. Use cross-surface audits, prototypes, and implementation reviews to catch inconsistencies and bring core Groups experiences closer to the Facebook Design System.

What changed

  • People could move through Groups with clearer orientation and context. +0.26% engagement

I redesigned navigation, transitions, and key entry points across Community Home so people could move between Groups experiences with a clearer sense of where they were and what came next.

  • Core Groups experiences became more consistent across platforms. ~82% design-system adoption

I defined reusable panels, invitation patterns, and states across iOS and Android, replacing one-off solutions with shared patterns and bringing more of Groups onto the Facebook Design System.

  • Implementation quality improved across core surfaces. 17 reviews · 200+ UI issues resolved

Cross-surface audits and prototypes exposed inconsistencies that weren't visible when features were reviewed independently. I worked closely with engineering through implementation to resolve more than 200 UI issues and raise the quality bar across the experience.
