On Facebook, private sharing is how conversations start—a Reel or listing sent to one person—but continuing meant replying in Messenger. As messaging expanded, entry points designed in isolation made conversations less predictable.

Impact

  • Standardized in-app messaging across Facebook surfaces by designing a reusable interaction model that continued guiding rollout after handoff.
  • Informed a rollout addressing ~144M monthly switches from Facebook to Messenger, advancing Facebook's strategy to bring private sharing back into the core app.
  • Validated the interaction model through experimentation: +21.9% thread opens (iOS), +27.1% (Android), while maintaining neutral topline metrics.
